My Week Without Facebook

ImageThere is a video going around with a poem about how social networking is not so social at all. In the past I have written blog posts about the very same thing, although it’s a truth I know all to well, It’s also something that until last week I found inescapable.

Like with anything else someone wants, I came up with the excuse of ‘needing’ Facebook and like sites for advertising my business and keeping in touch with family. Although those are also true I manipulated them into constructs to feed my nasty habit of checking the Facebook app every few minutes, Just in case something happened since the last time I checked. (even know that was probably minutes before.)

So I decided to make a change. I turned on some of the email notifications so that important stuff (i.e. requests to join groups I organize) would show up. Then I took the plunge and deleted the app off my phone! Now I will visit Facebook not more then once a week, and when I do it’s maintenance not just scrolling through my news-feed mindlessly.

This morning marks the first week of my more-or-less Facebook free life, and I was welcomed with a happy realization. I have more time and energy now. One of my habits was scrolling my news-feed while a drink my coffee in the morning. Now I take my coffee in a thermos and go straight to the barn, I groomed 2 and worked 3 horses this morning (instead of my usual 2) before my desk job started and had time left over to finish up the barn chores! (which usually had to wait until the evening.)

All that from just quitting Facebook.

Life is hard, there is no doubt about that. But by refining our techniques, and approaches to life, we can make it a heck of a lot more simple!
